  7. Please read this document carefully; it contains important
  8. information about Norton Rescue Disk.
  9.  
  10. ===========
  11. Rescue Disk is designed for the Windows 98, Windows 98SE, and Windows
  12. Millennium.  Rescue Disk will not install or function on Windows NT,
  13. Windows 2000, or Windows XP.
  14. ===========
  15. The Rescue Disk utility requires a 3.5" floppy disk drive.  Rescue Disk
  16. requires up to seven 1.44MB 3.5" floppy diskettes.  720K disks and
  17. 5.25" diskettes are not supported.  2.88MB and 120MB LS-120 floppy 
  18. drives may be used to create Rescue Disks, but only using 1.44MB floppy
  19. diskettes. Rescue Disk does not detect USB drives.
  20. ===========
  21. If you create a Rescue Set on the hard drive, you will need to remove
  22. a command-line parameter while in the Rescue Shell.  When you launch
  23. the Rescue Shell from the hard drive, you will see this command:

  25. NAVDX.EXE C: /L /DOALLFILES /ZIPS/REPAIR /CFG:A
  26.  
  27. Because you created the Rescue Set on the hard drive, you need to
  28. remove the "A" switch, otherwise Rescue will try to look for
  29. its configuration information (and VirusDefs) from a floppy.  So,
  30. the command-line prompt should look like this:

  32. NAVDX.EXE C: /L /DOALLFILES /ZIPS/REPAIR /CFG:
  33.  
  34. This will instruct Rescue to look in the current directory (where you
  35. created the Rescue set).  If you remove the "/CFG:A" switch entirely,
  36. Rescue will default to looking in the drive where you installed Rescue.

  38. Basic Rescue Disk recovery must be run from DOS.  Rescue Disk
  39. does not support running the Basic Rescue Disk recovery
  40. utility from a DOS window inside Windows.
  41. ===========
  42. The DOS Rescue Disk utility in Basic Rescue mentions that it has the 
  43. capability to restore the CMOS information of the machine.  This is 
  44. incorrect.  The CMOS restore feature was removed.
  45. ===========
  46. Rescue Disk sets will not boot properly or repair hard disks that 
  47. require a Dynamic Drive Overlay (DDO).  Dynamic Drive Overlay refers to
  48. a particular type of drive translation software.  Brand names such as 
  49. Ontrack Disk Manager, MaxBlast, EZ-Drive, or BootMagic basically
  50. perform the same function as Dynamic Drive Overlays.  If the
  51. computer uses a DDO, it must be loaded each time the system
  52. is started.  Your DDO software includes either a bootable
  53. floppy disk that has the necessary files, or it includes
  54. instructions for how to create a bootable floppy disk that
  55. you can use to start your system before running programs from
  56. the Rescue Disk set.
  57. ===========
  58. If you have GoBack installed and it is enabled, do not use the
  59. Rescue Recovery Wizard to restore your partition tables.  Doing
  60. so will cause GoBack to be disabled the next time you restart your
  61. machine.
  62. ===========
  63. If Rescue Disk freezes while you are creating Rescue Disks,
  64. format the disk in Windows and run Rescue Disk again.
  65. ===========
  66. Creating a Rescue Disk set requires that you restart your
  67. system using the Rescue Disk set, in order to complete the
  68. set creation.  Restarting your system after an update is
  69. optional, but is highly recommended.
  70. ===========
  71. We strongly recommend shutting down any applications running
  72. in the background before creating a Rescue Disk set.
  73. ===========
  74. Disk Manager partitions are not compatible with Rescue Disk.
  75. ===========
  76. Rescue Disk does not support Rescue Disk sets created by
  77. previous versions Rescue Disk. Please make and test a new
  78. Rescue Disk set.
  79. ===========
  80. Rescue Disks require the following Norton Utilities and
  81. Norton Anti-Virus components to be complete:
  82.  
  83.    For a Basic Rescue Disk set:
  84.    - Norton Utilities DOS applications
  85.    - Norton Anti-Virus
  86.  
  87. If you do not have these components, some features of
  88. the Rescue Disks will not be available.
  89. ===========
  90. Rescue Disk disks are closely tied to the operating system.
  91. If you are not using a full release version of Windows 98,
  92. Windows 98SE, or Windows Millennium, Rescue Disk may not have full 
  93. functionality.
  94. ===========
  95. Rescue Disk does not support compressed disks.
  96. ===========
  97. You cannot save Rescue Disk items to the root of any hard
  98. disk. The root typically contains important data that
  99. could be overwritten.
  100. ===========
  101. Some customers have reported problems with Rescue Disk not
  102. functioning correctly when running in conjunction with
  103. MagnaRAM or QEMM97. If Rescue crashes on your system, try
  104. disabling the MagnaRAM option to see if it clears up the
  105. problem.

  108. information regarding problems creating Rescue sets and/or 
  109. problems booting from Rescue sets.
